'A Walk in the Park!'
‘A walk in the park!’ was created in response to the introduction of ‘Defensive Architecture’. Mechanical benches are designed to prevent homeless people from lying down. The benches are on a timer and when evening arrives spikes come up through the bench seat to prevent people using them (this is a real invention). The triple seat bench in the scene was inspired by a 14th century design by an unknown cabinet maker. The horizontal figures on the central back rest act like a memorial to people who have died on the streets in the past. The 3 central characters wear their humanity on the outside, symbolised by their luxurious robes. Their bodies contort themselves over the raised spikes in order to accommodate their bodies and thrive regardless.
